My Why!
I hated this question. My friend, Tracey, is a very intuitive person and she's really spot on with channeling your emotions and digging deeper. I knew, "because I want to write" wasn't going to be a good enough response.
To be honest, though, this is why I love her. It's painful to dig deep, to pick through the weeds of confusion and masses of chaos that sets up camp inside my head, but when I get to the root, the core of the answer...man, is it MIND BLOWING.
This was my response once I finally found the words to say. I thought I'd share it here because I feel like it is something others may be inspired by to look into THEIR why.
As a realistic fiction author I hope to encompass a safe community where readers can come and get to know an author who inspires to share stories based on real life experiences that many people aren't able, are wanting to, or think to talk about. My novels are about situations that take us through character journeys that usually lead to opposite sides of what society believes or has taught us. For example, in Chasing Time, I address the idea behind choosing not to go the medical route to live, but to accept and appreciate the time we're given. Society teaches us that when you are sick, you go see a doctor. But, gone are the days when that is our only option. I want to inspire readers through fictional stories to take a step back and consider other ways to do the things we're faced with, especially during the most trying times of our lives. Life is not meant to be black and white, gray isn't an ugly color, and it's okay to not be on one side or the other. My hope is to show readers through a sense of community that doing things the "right way" may not be the right way. Beyond that, I just want to write, and I'd love for readers to take a chance on a different way of storytelling than they are used to and open their minds to other opportunities to capture and enjoy a story, no matter how real or fictional it may be.
It's taken me a lot of trauma and nearly a decade for me to reach this response. But the more I read over it, the truer it becomes. I hope if you're new here and are hesitant to come on this journey with me, that you'll change your mind and give me a chance. If you don't like my work, it's okay to walk away. I'd love to have you either way.
